ABOUT THE SUSD #30 EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT FOUNDATION
The Sahuarita Unified School District Educational Enrichment Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 2003 with the mission of enriching the educational opportunities in the Sahuarita Unified School District (SUSD) and throughout the community. The Foundation works closely with SUSD administration to enhance the programs and offerings available to students in the district and promote educational excellence.
The Foundation supports district recognition programs, athletics, career and technical education, college scholarships, the Early Childhood Center, the L.I.N.K program, and the Amado-Sahuarita Adult Learning Program, as well as provides resources for educational needs that are not covered by the district’s regular budget.
PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY THE FOUNDATION
SPECIAL INITIATIVES:
As public school funding in Arizona continues to decline, the Foundation is increasingly working to secure resources for educational needs that are not covered under the district’s regular budget. In the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the Foundation assisted with the following special initiatives:
Band Uniform Fundraiser
The Foundation is supporting the purchase of new Sahuarita High School Marching Band uniforms. Current uniforms are over eleven years old, in need of constant repair, and have prevented the band from performing at major events. With the district’s soft capital funding slashed in recent years, the Foundation initiated a community support campaign.
National History Day
In April of 2011, sixteen Anza Trail 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students qualified to compete at the National History Day in College Park, Maryland. National History Day is a nationally acclaimed, academic enrichment program that promotes the study of history in our schools. With just a month and a half to raise travel costs for these students, the Foundation donated $1,000.00 toward this exceptional opportunity.
ONGOING PROGRAMS:
College Scholarships for SUSD Seniors
Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded over $20,000 to twenty-three graduating seniors pursuing higher education. The Foundation considers financial need, academic merit, and community service in its selection process. Scholarships are awarded each May and applications can be obtained at high school guidance offices.
District Athletics
With support from Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Sierrita, the Foundation supports extra-curricular athletics and physical education programs. In the 2011-2012 year, the Foundation has provided athletic funding to Sahuarita Middle School and Walden Grove High School totaling $17,510.00.
District Recognition Programs
With generous support from Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Sierrita, the Foundation helps honor outstanding students, teachers, and staff throughout the district. One initiative, the “Leader in Character” award, recognizes students who exemplify the Sahuarita values of outstanding citizenship. Each month, principals identify one student from their respective schools who serves as a strong model of character, exemplifying values such as responsibility, perseverance, organization, flexibility, patience, caring, and sense of humor. Students and their families are invited to be recognized by the SUSD Governing Board and receive a framed certificate and gift card to Barnes and Noble. With sponsorship by the Green Valley News/Sahuarita Sun, each month’s honorees also appear in the local paper.
Career and Technical Education
The Foundation helps support Career and Technical Education (CTE) to prepare our students for a wide range of careers in a constantly changing global economy. CTE covers a variety of challenging fields and diverse subject areas including, trade and industrial, business and marketing, family and consumer sciences, health occupations, public safety and security, robotics/automation, construction, culinary arts, and automotive technology. This program is sponsored by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Sierrita.
L.I.N.K.
The L.I.N.K program provides before and after school care for children ages 4-14 at two locations in Sahuarita. L.I.N.K. also provides Pre-K programs for ages 4-5.
Early Childhood Center (ECC)
The ECC provides after school care for children ages 5-10 and a summer program for children up to 9 years old. For more information, please visit: www.susd30.us/childhood/.
Amado-Sahuarita Adult Learning Program
The Amado-Sahuarita Adult Learning Program provides free classes in English as a second language, citizenship preparation, and GED preparation to the underserved adult population of southern Pima County. The Program receives funding from a variety of sources, including the Country Fair White Elephant, Greater Green Valley Community Foundation, Rotary Club of Green Valley, and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Sierrita.
